What is WHMIS Training?
There are many different types of workplace injuries that happen all the time. Right training and education can help employees avoid injuries in the workplace. One form of training that can help employees avoid potential injuries at work is by undergoing WHMIS training.
WHMIS stands for Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System. This involves all hazardous materials including chemicals and gases found in any workplace. This system helps to avoid injury and ensure protection of the environment. The way that people handling hazardous chemicals are kept safe is by teaching them how to handle and dispose of dangerous materials and how to read safety labels.
WHMIS is important for workers because it helps protect their health and the health of the workplace and safety of the environment. Different kinds of chemicals are used in workplaces. And these chemicals have different side effects. The damage they can cause are also different so they have different handling requirements. Knowing how to handle these materials is not the only thing involved in WHMIS. In this training employees will know how to avoid contact with chemicals and what to do if they are exposed to toxic chemicals which can cause respiratory and other health problems. It also involves dealing with materials that have to be cleaned and disposed of in specific ways. These regulations can help employees avoid risks and prepare for potentially dangerous situations.
In different areas, all regulations will have the same basics. It involves labelling dangerous materials. There is a regulation of continuous training on labels and potential hazards. Part of WHMIS is the MSDS or maintenance of material safety data sheets.
Employees need to have training if the workplace contains or use products that have WHMIS symbols and label. Employees should be trained by their employers under federal regulations. Training is only for employees that are exposed to these materials and who are likely to come in contact with them. Employees who dont find themselves in these situations dont need the training. YOU need to be trained as a new employee even you are already WHMIS certified. This is because training is specific to the workplace.
There is general training and site-specific training in a WHMIS training. General training educates employees on labeling and symbols on hazardous materials. Employees need to know how to read the labels.
There is also WHMIS training that you can take online. Employees are updated on WHMIS regulations and labels in online training. The online training does not cover the site-specific training of WHMIS.
Training in your specific workplace is site-specific training. Here you will be taught what substances are there and how to handle them in your own specific workplace. Disposing of chemicals and how to deal with emergency situations are also taught.
WHMIS training makes your employees become safe and well prepared for this tasks.
